On Monday evening, April 6, the Bristol Sports Hall of Fame held its 17th annual Jack Hines Scholar-Athlete Banquet at Nuchie’s, a program where juniors and seniors from Bristol’s three high schools meeting specific academic and athletic criteria are feted.
Tad Doyle, a 1974 St. Paul graduate, received the Joe McGinn Award, given to an individual who displays the traits of the late Bristol Eastern graduate who displayed personal courage and determination.
And, speaking on behalf of the scholar-athletes was St. Paul senior Brendan Carroll. He was joined by Bristol Central’s Andrew Damon-Smith and Bristol Eastern’s Stephen Goodrich in receiving scholarships from the Hall of Fame.
Doyle has been a volunteer high school coach in various sports since 1980, and spent 25 years as an uncle for the Eastern Regional Little League Tournament and 10 years as a Little League coach. The past eight years, he’s also been coaching AAU baseball and basketball.
“It’s about the kids, the coaches, the sports,” he told me prior to the banquet. “I don’t do it for the honors, I do it for the kids. They give me a lot of satisfaction.”
