Albie Gurske is regarded as one of Bristol’s greatest all-around athletes. During a storied career at Bristol High School from 1930-33, Gurske lettered 12 times as a standout in football, basketball and baseball.

He was selected first-team All-State in each sport on one or more occasions. For the 1931 gridiron squad (10-0), Gurske lead Connecticut scholastic offense with 20 touchdowns and 120 points, while the team was recognized as mythical state co-champions.

The 1933 basketball team on which he was a featured player, won the New England High School crown. He went on to star in football and baseball at Fordham University before pitching for the New York Yankees in the minor leagues.

In the years that followed, he became known as one of the state’s best semi-pro pitchers for a number of area baseball teams.
