Born in Bristol, he later moved to New Britain as a youngster where he went from the sandlots of baseball there to the major leagues, playing between 1913-1923.

During these years, he played for the Boston Braves, Cincinnati Reds, New York Giants and Philadelphia Athletics. A shortstop, he started for the Reds in the eight-game 1919 World Series against the Chicago White Sox.

The Reds won the championship that year in what became known as the Black Sox Scandal. Of the four Bristol natives with big league credentials, Kopf played the most games while compiling a .249 lifetime batting average.

Bill Kopf is an inductee of the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and the New Britain Connecticut Sports Hall of Fame.
