A Mary A. Callen graduate, Doug played football, baseball, basketball and track at Bristol Central High School during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
As an All-State high school football selection in 1970, he rushed for 1,280 yards and scored 128 points.
He went on to become a standout at Columbia University, earning All-Ivy, All-East, All-ECAC and All-American honors. Doug was an Ivy League player of the year at Columbia his senior year, and in recent years was placed on Columbia’s Team of the Century in football.
He led the Ivy League in rushing and scoring in 1975 while 25th overall in the nation that year for Division 1 schools.
After graduating from college, Doug spent four years under contract with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants of the NFL. He coached college football at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University and on the high school level at Bristol Central, St. Paul’s and Vinal Tech in Middletown.
