Joseph J. “Sugar” Hugret has long been regarded as one of Bristol’s all-time great athletes, a standout football and basketball player, class of 1929 at Bristol High.
Later he was a standout two-sport athlete at NYU, earning All-American status in football. Two Bristol High basketball teams he starred on won state titles. He was a player/coach in football for area teams and was given a chance to play in the National Football League in the 1930s – only a knee injury prevented him from doing so.
Through the years his continued interest and support of local sports enhanced his popularity with those in the sports community. Among honors he received was being recognized by the Bristol Tramps Sports Reunion Committee in 1974.
