A 1988 graduate of Bristol Eastern, he was a member of the 1987 Bristol Eastern football team and was both a first team All-Conference and All-State pick. A tri-captain his senior season, he was a National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete. He once had 237 yards receiving in a single game, recorded 967 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns in a single season and 1,200 for his career, school records at the time. He also excelled in basketball and served as a team co-captain his senior year, averaging 17 points, six rebounds, six assists, and two steals, while hitting on 80 percent of his free throw attempts, and was named All-State honorable mention.
He went on to Hamilton College, where he continued to play the two sports. He was a football tri-captain his senior season in 1992, a first team All-NESCAC selection, and is ranked second all time in Hamilton College football history for career receiving yards and career touchdown receptions. In basketball, Hamilton, went 82-9 overall during his playing days. He was a key member of the team that was ranked No. 1 in Div. III in 1991 with a regular season record of 24-0, 26-1 overall.
