A 1980 Bristol Eastern graduate, he participated in football and both indoor and outdoor track.

In football, he was all-conference for the 1978 and 1979 seasons, and All-State as a senior.

He earned all-conference recognition in indoor track twice and three times outdoors. A school record-holder in the sport, he received All-State honors twice in both seasons as well as Honorable mention National High School Track All-American as a senior. He also held state track records both indoor and outdoor track, while also capturing top honors in the state postseason individual championships.

He went on to UConn and Syracuse University, where he continued competing in both sports. In football, he earned 1984 All Yankee Conference Honors and Associated Press 1AA All-American team honorable mention on defense.
