Maurice “Moe” Baker, a native of Berlin, N.H. and currently a resident of New Hartford, participated in track while serving with the Army’s Eighth Division. He threw the discus, hammer and javelin.

Before moving to Bristol, where he raised his family and was employed by the New Departure-Hyatt Division of General Motors, he worked in the lumber camps of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

In the late 1960s, he entered and won a world arm-wrestling championship, the first of a remarkable five such titles. His exploits in the sport were covered in the media, The Bristol Press, The Hartford Courant and nationally in Milio Magazine.

In addition to his world titles, that brought him appearances on national television, Moe captured a number of other prestigious crowns, including New England, North American, Virginia State and European titles.
