Robert L. “Bobby” Jones played sports at Clarence A. Bingham School and baseball in the McCabe-Waters Little League before going on to Bristol Eastern High where he ran cross country and played both basketball and baseball.

Eastern won both the basketball and baseball league titles his senior year, the basketball team going undefeated.

As captain of the basketball team, he set a school record of 42 points scored in one game and made the all-state team. He played on Zone One Bristol American Legion baseball championship teams in 1966, also the state championship team that year, and 1967 before attending Amherst College where he became a member of two Little Three Conference championship teams in 1970, in baseball and basketball.

During his early years at Amherst he was a member of the U. S. Federation Olympic Baseball championship team. He batted .434 his senior year at Amherst and was named to the Division III College All-American Baseball Team. He went on to play minor league baseball.
