Bristol Eastern’s class athlete in 1976, captain of the soccer team Spec was an all-conference and all-state selection and received all-conference honors in baseball. Captain of Bristol’s American Legion baseball team he was a Zone One all-star, Connecticut tournament all-star and led the team in batting.
While playing at Tunxis Community College he was a gold glove recipient. He also played for the Bristol Caseys and Bristol Oilers in the Waterbury Twi-Met League. He played on three championship teams in the CMSBL with Fradette Agency earning all-star recognition and led the league with a .554 batting average in 1989.
He started his coaching career at age 21 while coaching Lewis S. Mills in Burlington and returned to BEHS as an assistant for 13 seasons. He skippered Bristol’s Legion baseball team to two state titles (2004, 2006) and five zone championships, doing so between 2003-2009 with an .801 winning percentage. His 2003 team was state runners-up and his 2004 team were Eastern Regional runners-up and in 2008 his team won the Eastern Regional Championship en route to World Series play. He was Connecticut American Legion Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2006 and was New England Coach of the Year in 2008.
In 2018 the Bristol Tramps honored Spec with the William “Bill” A. Garrett award.
