Steve Mills played three sports growing up as a native of Bristol. He was an All Star in both the Forestville Little League and Boys Club basketball teams and was a member of championship teams in Midget Football.

At Bristol Eastern, Steve earned six varsity letters starting at guard in basketball and quarterback in football. During his basketball career, Eastern went to three state tournaments reaching the quarterfinals in 1990. In football, he led the Lancers to a State Championship in 1988, the lone such title in Bristol history. Steve was All-Conference and All-State in both 1988 and 1989 and was named the Bobby Dodd Back of the Year and selected as a Football Foundation Scholar Athlete. He was also honored as the Gatorade Player of the Year for both Connecticut and New England in 1989.

Steve went on to become the quarterback at Yale University and had career passing yards and efficiency totals that placed him in the top 5 in school history. He earned both GTE Academic All-American and Gerald Ford Scholar Athlete honors while at Yale.
