Monahan first found success as a three-sport coach at Bristol High School when his charges captured three straight state basketball championships and earned trips to the national championships in Chicago in 1927-29. His 1933 and 1934 teams captured top Connecticut honors, with the 1933 team also finishing as the best in New England.
In 1931, Monahan produced the school’s only undefeated football team and shared the mythical state championship. His 1933 baseball squad produced a 19-1 record and was considered the strongest in the state that season. Monahan’s 1941 basketball team went on to capture the school’s second New England Championship.
