Tom Shopay is one of the few Bristol natives who have played Major League Baseball. He started with the New York Yankees in 1967 and 1969 and later played with the Baltimore Orioles during the 1971-72 and 1975-77 seasons.
A member of Baltimore’s 1971 World Series squad, Shopay tied a record which still stands, making four pinch hit plate appearances in the post-season classic. Growing up in Bristol, Shopay honed his playing skills as a standout on several Bristol Eastern High School and Bristol American Legion baseball teams during the early 1960’s.
Despite concentrating on baseball, Shopay, a gifted and fleet-footed athlete, excelled in any sport he attempted, including scholastic soccer and basketball.
