A Bristol High School graduate, Vito Montelli went on to experience a stellar coaching career in Connecticut high school basketball.
He spent six years as head coach of Notre Dame High School before taking over the reins at St. Joseph High School, both Dioceses of Bridgeport schools.
During the 2009 season while coaching in his 47th season and having already held the state record for number of basketball wins, he notched his 800th victory.
His teams won nine state championships with 15 appearances in the state finals.
He had 25 players earn McDonald’s All-American status and in 1990 was selected to coach in its All-American game. In 1992, he was chosen “National Coach of the Year”
by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association and was awarded the Gold Key by the Connecticut Sportswriters Alliance in 1995.
He was inducted into the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame as well as the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.
